Mathematics Unit 2: Applications of Algebra and Calculus
SCQF Level 7
Explore the applications of fundamental elements involved in algebra and calculus.
Why take this course?
The general aim of the Unit is to develop advanced knowledge and skills that involve the application of algebra and calculus to real-life and mathematical situations, including applications of geometry. Learners will acquire skills in interpreting and analysing problem situations where these skills can be used.
The Outcomes cover the binomial theorem, the algebra of complex numbers, properties of functions, rates of change and volumes of revolution. Aspects of sequences and series are introduced, including summations, proved by induction.
What you will experience
You will cover the use of mathematical operational and reasoning skills relevant to applications of algebra and calculus.
This course requires you to manage your workload independently, and will involve attendance at a campus or centre - often for assessment purposes only.
You are required to have a Higher Mathematics qualification.
What you will need
You will need a calculator for this course.
What you need to know
This Unit forms part of the Advanced Higher Mathematics course but can also be studied as a stand alone Unit. The Advanced Higher qualification enables learners to develop skills in selecting and applying complex mathematical techniques in a variety of situations requiring knowledge of mathematics. These skills will enable progression to further learning and to employment.
At North East Scotland College
On successful completion of this course, learners could progress to a course in Higher Education - for example a degree or Higher National Diploma in mathematics or in a mathematics-related area.
