If you are currently in S3 to S6 and are a bit undecided about what you want to do when you leave school, then the College Experience can help you make an informed decision about the best option.
No matter what your plans - whether you’d like to go straight into work or study more at college or university - coming to NESCol for a couple of days during May and June as part of our College Experience programme is a sensible choice! It will give you a chance to experience life as a student and meet some of our lecturing staff, who will be happy to advise you on the many opportunities available to you when it comes to subject areas and courses.
What we offer
The College Experience programme has been designed to offer school pupils the opportunity to attend a course at a campus near them, meaning that anyone involved can have a good look at the course options available, where the courses run and the timescales involved – all to help you plan your future, and decide which courses you might consider applying for.
A wide range of courses are available via the College Experience Programme.
How to apply
When you have decided on a course, or courses, that you are particularly interested in, please complete an application form and return it to the teacher identified at your school. Places are limited so each pupil can only enrol on one course.
If there is a specific reason that you need to choose a particular course date, such as SQA exams, please highlight this on your application form.
Places on courses are not guaranteed and you are more likely to get a place on a course if you identify 3 courses which interest you, in order of preference. In addition, due to the high levels of demand, you also may not always get your first choice of course.
Please note that some of our courses will run through the SQA exam diet – so please check your exam timetable and only sign up for a course if it won’t affect your study time!
What you need to know
Health and Safety
Whilst you are at North East Scotland College, you must adhere to all Health and Safety rules and instructions. As a College Experience student you will be briefed on the evacuation procedures and be given specific instructions relating to your course.
Due to safety restrictions, some courses may highlight specific clothing requirements. You should therefore ensure you have the clothing and/or shoes required. Failure to bring any identified PPE will result in you not being able to participate in the course.
Your schedule at College
Your College day will last from 9:30am to 3:30pm. You will have morning and afternoon breaks, and an hour for lunch. Transport to and from College is usually to be arranged by your family, although occasionally school transport is available.
Please note that certain courses do not run on consecutive days, and pupils should ensure that they will be available for each day that their chosen course is running.
Food and drink
At all College sites you will find canteen facilities and vending machines allowing you the option of buying hot meals, sandwiches, hot and cold drinks, and snacks. If you prefer you can bring your own food. Eligible pupils can be provided with a lunch voucher upon request.
Full attendance and successful completion of the course will entitle you to receive a College Certificate evidencing your attendance.
