This wide ranging course will allow you to specialise in two of the major branches of science: chemistry and biology.
Why take this course?
This is a wide-ranging course covering the theoretical and practical aspects of modern sciences. You will specialise in two of the major branches of science – Chemistry and Biology.
The course also includes a large amount of training in essential practical skills and modern instrumentation of direct relevance to local and national employers. It is intended both for those candidates wishing to find employment in the science industries, or to progress to further (degree level) study.
What you will experience
This course covers chemical and life sciences, and includes a significant amount of advanced level practical work. The course will allow you to develop essential laboratory skills and acts as excellent preparation for progression towards further study or employment.
Successful completion of this course will allow you to progress to year 2 of HND Applied Sciences at NESCol.
Applicants should have Higher qualifications in Chemistry and Biology/Human Biology, or a Higher in one of these subjects and a National 5 (at a minimum of grade B) or equivalent in the other. Maths at National 5 (Grade C) or equivalent is also required.
Alternatively, applicants should have successfully completed the NC Applied Sciences (SCQF Level 6) course at Grade B or above.

If you choose to complete the HND course after your HNC, you could progress to university where you could enter year 2 or year 3 of a related degree programme.
Employment opportunities are typically at technician or researcher level in science-related industries. Examples of employers include Balmoral Group, Champion Technologies, Intertek, SGS, Core Labs (within oil and gas), hospital labs, LEA school technicians and organisations in the food industry who need to conduct microbiology testing.
