Why take this course?

Biotechnology involves harnessing biological processes for industrial applications – this includes everything from genetic engineering of micro-organisms and plants to vaccine production, cloning and animal cell tissue culture.

Biotechnology has been identified as a key growth area for the Scottish and global economy in the coming years so a qualification in Biotechnology will open doors to a range of exciting careers.

This course was developed by SQA in cooperation with the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBIOIC) to provide you with the necessary underpinning science and up to date laboratory skills for employment in this rapidly developing field.

What you will experience

The HND Biotechnology course offers both theoretical and hands-on, practical learning across a diverse range of interesting topics. It is similar to our HND Applied Science but has some exciting differences.

The course covers biotechnological methods used in industry to make everyday products and even generate energy. You will also explore the biology of the human cell and metabolic pathways in the human body.

You will also learn more about state-of-the-art techniques including cloning, DNA analysis and growth of animal and plant tissue in the lab. In your second year, you will plan and carry out a lab-based biotechnology project during which you will develop skills highly sought after by employers.
