Study an HNC in S6

Pupils can complete an HNC qualification at NESCol while in their final year at school.

Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire pupils going into S6 can choose to study an Higher National Certificate (HNC) delivered by NESCol as part of their school timetable.

The year-long course allows pupils to experience College life and gain a qualification recognised by employers, before they leave school.

The HNC is best suited to those who have achieved a good set of Highers in S5 and are ready for the next stage of education.

HNC Courses

At SCQF Level 7, an HNC is equivalent to completing one year of an HND at College, or the first year of a university degree. In school terms, this is broadly the same as doing three Advanced Highers.

The courses are delivered over two full days in College on a Monday, and Wednesday and one half day online (Friday morning).

NESCol is currently offering three HNCs to choose from.

HNC Business

Enhance your knowledge of key business functions and develop a good understanding of the business world.

HNC Computing & IT for Business

Develop your skills and understanding in technology, business, computing and IT.

HNC Mechanical Engineering

Solve mechanical engineering problems using essential principles and processes.

How to apply

Applications should be made via the school subject choice forms and must be submitted by a member of school staff.

Interested pupils should arrange to speak to their guidance teacher about applying to College. It is recommended that pupils should only take one other school subject alongside their HNC.
