Award nominations provide birthday cheer

November 28, 2023

North East Scotland College is aiming to cap its 10th anniversary month with the latest in a long list of awards for the institution.

NESCol, which marked a decade since its inception on 1 November, has been nominated in three categories of the CDN College Awards 2023 and the winners will be announced on Thursday (30 November).

The Employer Connections Award nomination celebrates an innovative collaboration with P&J Live, which has provided training opportunities and career pathways for a succession of students as well as professional development for staff.

The Skills Development Award also recognised collaboration, this time with Aberdeen City Council as  students worked to promote Meta Skills to academy pupils across the city through a series of animations.

Zoey Filianore Wynters impressed the panel in the Student of the Year Award, selected following her dedicated work as Equality and Diversity Executive Officer with the NESCol Students’ Association.

At last year’s ceremony the College was crowned winner in the Employer Connections category, in recognition of the long-standing collaboration with industry partner Shell, and Jill Leishman was commended as a finalist in the Colleague of the Year award.

In 2021 NESCol was recognised for its commitment to diversity and sustainability with success in the Green Gown Awards, earning the Next Generation Learning and Skills prize for colleges and universities in the UK and Ireland.

Those are the latest triumphs for NESCol, which has quickly established a reputation for excellence since being established in 2013 through the merger of Aberdeen College and Banff and Buchan College.

Principal and Chief Executive Neil Cowie said: “Our greatest satisfaction comes from seeing students fulfil their potential in work and life, which is the motivation for every member of staff at NESCol.

“External recognition is an extension of the work that colleague do day in and day out to nurture all those who fall under our wing.

“It is always fantastic when those efforts reach a wider audience and the award success of previous years, coupled with the nominations for the CDN College Awards this year, are a great endorsement of the talents of our staff and students.”
