SuSTEMability Challenge brings budding creators together

Six primary school teams from across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire came together at Altens Campus for the final of the 2023 SuSTEMability Challenge.

SuSTEMability is a programme designed to inspire the next generation to play an active role in the North East’s focus on sustainability – with a focus on environmental, social and economic benefits. NESCol works with industry partners, including main sponsor OPITO, to put energy transition and green issues at the heart of school activity.

Teams tackle real world environmental issues by designing, developing, engineering and building solutions in a creative and fun format. Pupils are are provided with materials and expert support to help turn their concepts into prototypes.

Ten groups from P4 to P7 year groups took part in this year’s challenge, with six represented in the finals: Boddam; Braehead Builders; Braehead Goatz; Brimmond; Clerkhill; Skene.

Prizes were awarded in five categories: Overall winner – Skene; Overall runner-up – Boddam; Presentation award – Braehead Builders; Community award – Brimmond; Design award – Clerkhill; Team spirit award – Braehead Goatz.

Prizes included VR headsets, drones and smartwatches.

In addition to main sponsor OPITO, the challenge is supported by: Stork; Aberdeen Science Centre; Moray East Offshore Windfarm; Emerson; Stem Ambassador Hub; Net Zero Technology Centre.
