Laura’s dedication to coaching recognised

March 30, 2023

HND Sports Coaching and Development student Laura Fraser (20) has been named runner up in the Active Schools Volunteer of the Year awards. She was presented with her award at a formal evening event held at Thainstone House in Inverurie recently.

Laura began volunteering with Active Schools during her time as a pupil at Mintlaw Academy after finding a love for hockey in primary school. On leaving school, she decided to apply to study HND Sports Coaching and Development at North East Scotland College’s Aberdeen City Campus. She said, “I really love working with young people and passing on my passion for team sports so studying towards a formal qualification in that area seemed the natural choice when I left school. I’ve started coaching athletics recently and am enjoying that too.”

Being nominated for the award came as a complete surprise. Laura said, “When I got the email to say I was in the final three, I was shocked as I had no idea I had even been nominated! It was lovely to know that my efforts are appreciated and being invited to the formal presentation was a nice opportunity to get dressed up – lots of people think I wear my sports gear all the time which isn’t the case!”

When she finishes her HND at NESCol in the summer, Laura hopes to join third year of a degree in sports coaching at RGU followed by a year of post-graduate teacher training to become a PE teacher.
