Beauty Therapy Techniques

“The course, students and staff combined made for such a brilliant experience.  The facilities at NESCol are excellent and being able to develop your skills in a real life salon environment with clients is invaluable.  I can’t recommend College enough – regardless of the industry you want to go into it is a positive, inspiring environment to study in and can open the door to so many career opportunities.“

Emma Robertson (38) is a successful, award-winning entrepreneur with her own beauty therapy business and believes that alongside hard work and her passion for making people feel better about themselves, her College experience is to thank for her career achievements to date.

Owner of ‘The Beauty Den’ in Aberdeen, Emma has built up an extensive client base and offers a wide range of services from therapies to make-up artistry and specialist skin treatments from her purpose built premises.

Winner of the 2019 Beauty Therapist category at the North East Hair & Beauty Awards, Emma prides herself in offering a professional; client focused service and credits her time at College for instilling the importance of customer service into the way she runs her business.

Emma first came to College to study Business Administration but soon realized that her passion lay in the beauty industry.  She enrolled on an HND in Beauty Therapy and has not looked back since.  Emma said, “As soon as I stepped through the doors of the department I knew it was where I belonged.  I loved the course – it was fast-paced and challenging but learning skills in the different types of treatments meant everyday was different.

“I met some lovely fellow students, some of who are still my friends to this day.  The lecturing staff were professional and knowledgeable yet so friendly and welcoming.  The course, students and staff combined made for such a brilliant experience.  The facilities at NESCol are excellent and being able to develop your skills in a real life salon environment with clients is invaluable.”

After completing her HND, Emma worked at the renowned Marcliffe Hotel & Spa as a Beauty Therapist before being promoted to Head Therapist.  Relishing this experience for six years, Emma then made the move to become self-employed, establishing a salon in the city centre with a business partner. Emma said, “I loved running my own salon and was able to draw upon skills developed during my Beauty Therapy HND and indeed my Business Management qualification from College. So not only did NESCol give me the knowledge and skills to become a professional beauty therapist, it helped me understand the commercial side of running my own business.”

Seven years later, after getting married and having her two young daughters, Emma decided she wanted to work closer to home to fit around her children.  This led to the establishment of The Beauty Den in the Bridge of Don and her business has gone from strength to strength.  Emma said, “I can’t recommend College enough.  Regardless of the industry you want to go into it is a positive, inspiring environment to study in and can open the door to so many career opportunities.”
