Foundation Apprenticeship

FA Hospitality with Events

Name: Lucy MacLeod

FA course title: Hospitality

Secondary school attended: Aberdeen Grammar School

Why did you choose this Foundation Apprenticeship?

I had done practical cookery at school up to National 5 and the Foundation Apprenticeship offered the chance to progress to the next level. I prefer practical subjects and this course fits perfectly with that, not just with cookery but also with the events side too. The teaching staff are great and we learn a lot from their industry experience. College is different to school, it’s a lot closer to real life experience, and I’ve really enjoyed my time at NESCol.

What are your course highlights so far?

We each get to plan and prepare for our own event and I’m really looking forward to that. Mine is an Indian themed event and we’re involved in every element, from choosing the table settings and tableware through to deciding the menu, developing the dishes and delivering the event. We have a small class group and it’s good to work together on lots of different events and cooking styles.

What are your plans for the future?

I definitely want to do something relating to food and drink, maybe in nutrition rather than cookery. The Foundation Apprenticeship opens up lots of options. I’m looking at staying on at school in S6 and then could go to college or university to build on the qualifications I have already.
