Modern Apprenticeships

A Modern Apprenticeship lets people aged 16 and over earn a wage while gaining recognised qualifications, skills and work experience that help them build their career and support their employer.

A Modern Apprenticeship (MA) allows people aged 16 and over to gain industry-recognised qualifications while working in a paid job. Apprentices must be employed and can be either new recruits or existing employees.

Apprentices develop skills, gain workplace experience and improve their career prospects while earning a wage. This provides an alternative to full-time study.

For employers, Modern Apprenticeships help develop a skilled and confident workforce and provide support towards training costs, helping to support business growth and success.

How a Modern Apprenticeship works

A Modern Apprenticeship combines a paid job with training and assessment. Learning takes place mainly in the workplace, although some programmes also include time at College.

Training is based on industry standards and helps apprentices develop the skills, knowledge and qualifications needed for their role.

A Modern Apprenticeship is a partnership between the apprentice, employer and training provider.

The Apprentice

As part of a Modern Apprenticeship, the apprentice:

  • Develops skills and knowledge at work.
  • Completes training and assessments.
  • Works towards recognised qualifications.
  • Earns a wage while learning.
