Darren Reilly

HND Applied Science (Chemistry/Physics Route)
“I absolutely would recommend NESCol. It was the best thing I ever did.”
Adult returner Darren discovered a talent and passion for science at NESCol, and is now studying physics at the University of Aberdeen.
30-year-old Darren Reilly is from Aberdeen and grew up in Inverurie. He left school in fourth year, and after working a few odd jobs, he became a fryer in a fish and chip shop.
Darren worked in this role until the pandemic hit in 2020. With life suddenly on pause, he found himself with a lot of time on his hands to reflect on his future.
He then took a part-time biology course at NESCol which sparked his interest in science.
Darren said, “I enjoyed the experience, and the lecturer communicated in a way that made science accessible.
“I didn’t know if I could do it, but I decided to give full-time College it a try.”
Science at NESCol
Darren returned to education at the age of 25, joining the SCQF Level 5 science course. He thrived at College, moving on to NC Applied Science the following year, where he specialised in chemistry and physics.
In 2025, he completed his HND in Applied Science.
Darren said, “I fell in love with learning. I built relationships with the lecturers, who were very patient and always willing to help.
“I also met quite a few people in the class that I still speak to.”
Getting back into studying after a break is daunting, but Darren took it in his stride and discovered a passion and natural aptitude for science.
He said, “I liked the whole process of studying science and learning something new.
“The feeling you get when you’re struggling to understand something and then you get that ‘Aha!’ moment – it’s euphoric. Seeing your hard work pay off is vindicating.”
Science at university
After College, Darren decided to continue learning. He is currently in his second year at the University of Aberdeen, studying BSc Physics.
Darren said, “Uni felt like the natural progression and I wanted the challenge. I’m enjoying it – but it’s very different to College!
“I’ve narrowed my career path down to two fields: astrophysics or nuclear physics.”
Advice for students
Darren said, “I would absolutely recommend NESCol. It was the best thing I ever did. I am so appreciative of the staff and how helpful they were.”
His advice to other students is to always reach out if you need help.
He said, “Don’t suffer in silence. If you’re stuck, the science team will be more than happy to help, and they have an open door policy so you can go visit them with your questions.
“That can only take you so far – you do need to put in a lot of effort to pass your course. But your effort will shine through in your work.”
