“I’ve really enjoyed the practical side of the HNC. It’s given me the opportunity to build and refine my treatment skills in a professional setting and apply what we learn in class to real-life practice.”

Pabitra’s background in hospitality has given her excellent customer service skills – an ideal foundation for a career in complementary therapies.

Originally from Nepal, Pabitra Kumal (37) completed her education before working in the hospitality industry. Her experience includes roles such as General Assistant at the Bay Horse Hotel in Cumbria.

Now based in Aberdeen, Pabitra has successfully balanced her studies at NESCol with working part-time as a receptionist at Travelodge, demonstrating her dedication and commitment as an adult returner.

In 2022, she took her first step into the wellness sector by enrolling on the Introduction to Beauty course.

She said, “I chose NESCol because of its strong reputation for delivering high-quality vocational education and its supportive learning environment.

“The HNC Complementary Therapies programme particularly appealed to me as it provides a well-balanced combination of theory and hands-on experience, which is essential for a career in this field.”

Studying complementary therapies

After completing the introductory course, Pabitra continued her studies in beauty therapy, progressing to the advanced level and achieving her VRQ Level 3 Diploma.

In 2025, she took the next step in her journey and joined the HNC Complementary Therapies course. Part of the course involves gaining experience in NESCol’s salon, in:tuition, working with real clients and delivering treatments such as reflexology, aromatherapy and massage.

Pabitra said, “I’ve really enjoyed the practical side of the HNC. It’s given me the opportunity to build and refine my treatment skills in a professional setting and apply what we learn in class to real-life practice.

“I have valued the positive and supportive learning environment at College. It has been rewarding to study alongside like-minded individuals while developing both my personal and professional skills. My classmates were really friendly and encouraging, and I have loved working with them.

“The facilities have been excellent, particularly the practical therapy rooms, which provide a realistic working environment. The library and study resources have also been useful for my coursework.”

“The teaching has been of a high standard. My lecturers have been knowledgeable, professional, and supportive, making sure that we fully understand the subject and feel confident in our learning.”

Next steps

Now at the end of her College journey, Pabitra is hoping to build a career in the wellness industry, ideally in a professional spa or clinical setting.

She said, “The combination of my education and work experience has helped me develop strong interpersonal skills, professionalism, and the ability to work effectively in a customer-focused and caring environment.

“I aspire to lead a successful career as a qualified complementary therapist, continuously growing my skills and potentially specialising in advanced techniques. I might even open my own salon in the future!”
