Volunteer as a tutor in an Aberdeen City or Aberdeenshire school, as part of an eight-week scheme.
The bp Student Tutoring Scheme is a voluntary programme that gives students the opportunity to work with pupils in local primary and secondary schools.
Supported by bp, Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council, the scheme runs annually in partnership with NESCol, the University of Aberdeen and RGU.
As a bp Student Tutor, you’ll act as a role model for pupils, inspiring them to consider further or higher education pathways after school. You’ll gain work experience, employability skills, and the chance to experience what teaching would be like as a career.
Student tutors volunteer in an Aberdeen City or Aberdeenshire school for one half day a week, under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
Tutors spend one morning or afternoon a week in school for a period of eight weeks from January/ February to March/ April.
You must be able to commit to the full eight weeks.
You must be a registered student between October 2025 and April 2026.
If you are studying at SCQF Level 6 or below, you will only be able to apply for a primary school placement.
If you are studying a HNC/D (SCQF Level 7 or 8), you can apply for either primary or secondary schools.
Previous experience of working with children and young people is not necessary. All tutors will need to join the PVG scheme.
You’ll be placed in a school to help teachers and support pupils. Tasks will vary from school to school, but you may be asked to:
Discipline is not your responsibility and a teacher will be present at all times.
There will be a mandatory briefing session in December that you need to attend to take part in the scheme.
You will be given information from both Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Council about classroom expectations and child protection.
Support during your placement will be available from a Link Teacher in your allocated school, and the NESCol coordinator.
If you would like to apply for the bp Student Tutoring Scheme, you must attend one of our information sessions. This will cover information such as the scheme timeline, PVG disclosure and more details on the application and recruitment process.
