NESCol launches student photography exhibition in memory of Paul Nicol

May 26, 2026

The Photography Department at North East Scotland College (NESCol) has established a new photography exhibition showcasing student work and honouring former student and respected local photographer Paul Nicol, who passed away earlier this year.

Based at Curated in the Bon Accord Centre, the exhibition features work from second year HND Photography students, alongside pieces that celebrate Paul’s legacy.

A selection of Paul’s own photography will be on display, with a portrait in tribute to him, offering visitors an insight into his work and the mark he made on those around him.

At the heart of the exhibition is the Paul Nicol Award. This will be presented by Paul’s family at the opening evening to the student who has demonstrated outstanding photographic work and commitment to their course.

Karen Catto, Photography Lecturer, NESCol, said:

“Paul’s passing was deeply felt across our community, and we wanted to honour his memory in a way that truly reflects who he was – as a photographer, a student, and later, a friend to staff.

“Paul was an exceptional individual whose approach to photography and learning left a lasting impression. He was endlessly curious, consistently committed, and unafraid to experiment.

“His resilience, respect for others, and genuine care for his peers set him apart, while his creativity and high standard of work defined his practice.

“During his time at NESCol, Paul fully engaged with the course, demonstrating both strong application and an enthusiasm that inspired those around him.

“The Paul Nicol Award recognises students who embrace these same qualities. We are grateful to Paul’s family for their support and presence, which means a great deal as we remember and celebrate his life and work.”

Paul found his passion for photography in his forties, having run a small furniture business for many years. A cancer diagnosis prompted a change in his outlook on life, leading him to discover a natural talent and love of photography.

In 2019, he joined the HND Photography course at NESCol. Following graduation, Paul went on to build a successful career, working across film, digital and cyanotype photography.

Paul’s wife Emma Nicol said: “We are incredibly proud that Paul is being honoured in this way by NESCol, particularly as the award recognises a student who has shown similar enthusiasm, creativity, care and passion.

“The course was at a pivotal time in his life, providing a welcome focus and he learned so much, making wonderful connections as he developed his skills and expertise.

“Our family misses him every day, but we are thankful that we have all of his beautiful images to keep with us and are grateful to the College for keeping his memory alive through the next generation of students.”

Karen said: “We hope this award will continue for many years to come, serving as a lasting tribute to Paul and as an inspiration for future students to approach their practice with the same passion, integrity, and creativity he so clearly embodied.”

The HND Photography Exhibition will be open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays at Curated in the Bon Accord Centre, from 5-20 June 2026.
