HND Travel & Tourism
“The knowledge and practical skills I learned at NESCol have come into play with this role. I meet so many people from all over the world and take great satisfaction in recommending restaurants, activities, and experiences that will make their visit to Scotland an unforgettable one. “
Adam Matthew is confident he has found his niche in the travel and tourism industry after securing a role in the concierge team at the renowned Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa in Edinburgh.
Working at a prestigious hotel in the capital is a dream come true for Adam, and he is relishing the challenge of working in a customer-facing role at the 5-star establishment.
Adam’s NESCol experience
Adam came to NESCol after leaving Bridge of Don Academy and initially enrolled in the Preparation for Work course. Adam, who was diagnosed with autism as a teenager, thrived in the learning environment at College and progressed to the NC Travel & Tourism course before continuing his studies to HND Travel & Tourism.
Describing his time at NESCol, Adam said, “I enjoyed both courses and realised from studying travel & tourism that this was the career path I wanted to pursue. The courses covered a wide range of jobs in the industry and built my knowledge of the different aspects of this global sector. The lecturers at NESCol have great industry connections and I particularly enjoyed some of the visits we went on and hearing from the guest speakers who visited City Campus. “
Progression to university and skills development
His successful experience at NESCol gave Adam the confidence to apply to RGU and achieving his HND allowed him to enter directly into the third year of their BA (Hons) in International Tourism Management.
During his time at college and university, he worked in various hospitality-related jobs on a part-time basis which helped build his customer service skills.
Adam even had the opportunity to travel to the US to undertake a placement in a country club just outside of New York, unfortunately this was cut short because of the pandemic.
New beginnings
Adam graduated in 2021 with a 2:1 honours degree, thrilled with his achievement. He began working in reception at the Marriot Hotel in Dyce, before making the move to the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa in Edinburgh.
Adam initially worked as a Guest Services agent before being promoted to the Concierge team where he is enjoying his new challenge.
Describing his role, Adam said, “No two days are the same and my role involves greeting guests, ensuring their experience in the hotel is the best it can be, and providing advice and information to them about the city and further afield. ”
He continued, “The knowledge and practical skills I learned at NESCol have come into play with this role. I meet so many people from all over the world and take great satisfaction in recommending restaurants, activities, and experiences that will make their visit to Scotland an unforgettable one. “
Adam’s efforts recognised with award
Adam’s work at the Sheraton has been recognised by his employers after being awarded the ‘Spirit of the Grand’ award.
Hotel staff are encouraged to complete ‘Actions speak Louder’ cards when a colleague goes out of their way to be helpful and Adam was thrilled to be announced the 2024 winner.
He said, “Winning the award was a great confidence boost and it is lovely to have my efforts acknowledged. I’m looking forward to developing further in my role and expanding my network in the tourism and hospitality sector. In the future I would love to achieve Golden Keys status, the ultimate recognition and accolade in the industry. “
