Shell Engineering Scheme
“The staff are supportive, the facilities are well-equipped, and I’ve felt encouraged throughout my studies.”
Following two years on the Shell Engineering Scheme, Eva is continuing to grow her engineering skills with an apprenticeship at the St Fergus Gas Plant.
19-year-old Eva Rosie left Mintlaw Academy at the end of her fifth year and decided to study engineering at College.
She said, “I had heard that NESCol had a very good reputation for engineering courses, as well as supporting their students.”
Eva joined the Shell Engineering Scheme in 2023, which is exclusively delivered at Fraserburgh Campus. The scheme is a sponsored fast-track programme that helps students develop a broad range of skills and knowledge for electrical, mechanical and instrumentation engineering.
Studying engineering
As part of the scheme, students undertake four full-time qualifications, as well as a leadership certification and industry placements.
Eva thrived on the programme, making the most of both workshop and classroom-based learning opportunities.
She said, “I have particularly enjoyed the practical learning in the workshops, as well as being challenged to achieve my full potential in the academic aspects of the course.”
In the second year of the Shell Engineering Scheme, students complete two HNCs in Measurement and Control and Electrical Engineering. The hectic schedule only fed Eva’s drive to succeed, and she continued to excel at College, graduating on 20 September 2025 at Fraserburgh Campus.
Her excellent work ethic and high standard of work were recognised at the ceremony, where she received the HNC Electrical Engineering Award, sponsored by Score Group.
College life
Eva enjoyed her time at NESCol, praising both the support she received and the College facilities.
She said, “I would recommend studying at NESCol. The staff are supportive, the facilities are well-equipped, and I’ve felt encouraged throughout my studies.
“The College and my lecturers have been very supportive. As I am dyslexic, they provided extra time for assessments and access to assistive technology. My tutors have also been very understanding and made adjustments to help me succeed.
“I found the facilities had everything I needed and were easy to use. The library and study spaces have been especially helpful, and the workshops were great for getting hands-on experience and skills.”
Next steps
At the end of the Shell Engineering Scheme, students get the chance to interview for available apprenticeships with the company – and Eva was pleased to be selected for one!
She hopes to continue growing her skillset during her apprenticeship before getting a full-time job in the sector.
She said, “I secured an instrumentation apprenticeship at the Shell gas plant in Peterhead, and I plan to complete the two years on-site. After this, I will hopefully get a job as an instrument technician.”
Eva is grateful for the opportunities she’s had at NESCol.
She said, “I’d like to thank my course tutor and all my other lecturers for their support and encouragement during my studies.”
Shell Engineering Scheme
Students completing the Shell Engineering Scheme at NESCol have a very high success rate in securing rewarding jobs in the North East’s energy sector.
