HND Television (NextGen)

“NESCol is perhaps the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I found my spark there, and it set me on a creative path that I know is absolutely where I want to be.”

A spark ignited: how NESCol helped Kieron find his voice in film

Few people can say they’ve written, directed, and starred in a feature film before turning nineteen — but Kieron Williamson has done just that.

Kieron, from Westhill in Aberdeenshire, recently graduated with an HND in Television (NextGen) at NESCol’s Aberdeen Graduation Ceremony. Reflecting on his time at College, he shared:

“It’s perhaps the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I found my spark there, and it set me on a creative path that I know is absolutely where I want to be.”

Unlocking his potential

Kieron’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. He left secondary school midway through his fifth year, feeling uncertain and disheartened about the future. But everything changed when he discovered NESCol’s Filmcraft & Animation course — a turning point that reignited his passion and purpose.

“The filmcraft side of the course jump-started my brain,” he explained. “There’s a misconception that your options are limited if you don’t stay on at school and get Highers, but my experience at NESCol proves otherwise. Starting on a non-advanced course was the perfect introduction to college life. I loved every minute of it — the creative community at City Campus is incredible, and the lecturers are so nurturing and encouraging.”

Kieron progressed to the HND in Television, where he thrived. He praised the state-of-the-art facilities, including the on-campus TV studio, and seized every opportunity to develop his skills. Over two years, he created several short films, culminating in his most ambitious project yet: ‘A Half Ounce’ — a nearly hour-long feature film.

Directoral debut

The film tells the story of a single father’s struggle to provide a better life for his daughter while navigating Aberdeen’s criminal underworld. It features a technically demanding one-shot fight sequence and involved a cast and crew of over fifty people, many of whom were current or former NESCol students.

Talking about his passion project, Kieron said, “My initial idea grew from something relatively small and ended up involving a fifty-strong cast of crew. I co-ordinated everything from filming to make-up and costumes, set planning, acting and the soundtrack, then edited the final product. I am passionate about showcasing Aberdeen as a city and growing the creative community here. “

A Half Ounce premiered at Vue cinema in June 2025, drawing an audience of almost 300 people — a proud moment for Kieron and his team.

“As a director, you’re nothing without your cast and crew,” he added. “I’m forever indebted to the talented people who helped bring this film to life. Celebrating our success at the premiere was the best night of my life.”

Industry experience and new connections

Beyond filmmaking, Kieron also gained valuable experience volunteering at the sixth annual Rogue Invitational — a major strength and fitness event held at P&J Live in November 2024. It was the first time the event had been hosted outside the USA. Kieron and his fellow NESCol TV students supported the broadcast team in roles ranging from reporting and running to working with VR camera systems and playbacks. Rogue’s live streams attracted over four million viewers worldwide.

Kieron also assisted NESCol’s multimedia team, filming graduation ceremonies for the Music Hall’s large screens — an experience he found both enjoyable and professionally enriching. This year, however, he’ll be on the other side of the camera, proudly collecting his qualification.

He credits his parents as his biggest supporters:

“My Mum and Dad have always said it’s important to do what you love. Through NESCol, I discovered my passion — and I’m so positive about what the future holds.”

Progression to university and next steps

Kieron has now taken the next step in his journey, recently moving to Edinburgh to study at Napier University on their BA (Hons) Film degree. Immersed in the capital’s thriving creative scene, he’s focused on building a career as a director and writer — and with his talent, drive, experience and positive attitude, there’s no doubt big things lie ahead.
