HND Advertising & PR

“I would 100% recommend NESCol. First and foremost for the obvious academic reasons and achieving a qualification. But also for being a stepping stone to lead to other opportunities, professionally and personally. It’s an environment where you’re supported and encouraged to make your own success. With the right attitude and the help of the staff and your peers, you can make that happen. “

Mark came to NESCol after his sixth year at school. Unsure what he wanted to do with his future, he chose College because of the wide choice of courses available and the knowledge that it could help him progress to university. After initially starting on a sports course, Mark realised this wasn’t the right path for him and switched to a non-advanced course in TV, Radio and Photography. This allowed him to access the HND in Advertising & PR which he really enjoyed.

Mark said of his College experience, “For me there were two aspects that I benefited from. The courses involved a lot of practical work and in cases, real work life scenarios. I enjoyed that it gave you responsibility to manage projects and events, work as a team and showcase your work. We were given the opportunity to get involved with some really exciting events including promoting NESCol’s Fresher’s Week. I also really enjoyed the social aspect of College. I struggled with confidence at school and having to work with my peers on the course meant I had to communicate and get to know people quicker. I’m proud to say that I still have great friendships from my time at NESCol to this day. “

Successful completion of his HND saw Mark take advantage of the College’s Degree Link partnership with The Robert Gordon University and he progressed directly into third year of a BA in Corporate Communications. After graduating, Mark went travelling before returning to Scotland and working in business development. From there he moved into recruitment and spent three years working for Brewdog. These experiences have led him to his current role with Developing the Young Workforce North East as an Employer School Coordinator helping young people make the transition from education to employment.

Mark is passionate about his role with DYW and working with young people. “Working with schools and their pupils to ensure they have the best support available to make their career choices is my aim. The skills I developed at College including communication, presenting, teamwork are vital to my role. “
