NESCol student medals at Scottish Student Sport judo tournament

January 23, 2026

Student Barry Shum made his competitive debut last term at the Scottish Student Sport (SSS) Kyu Grade Open, taking home a bronze medal for his judo skills.

Held in Cumbernauld in November, Barry competed in three matches in the tournament which was open to 2nd to 4th Kyu grades. He secured one win and two losses, earning him third place for his first formal competition.

Barry is currently studying HND Fitness, Health and Exercise at Aberdeen City Campus. Since the tournament, he has advanced to 2nd Kyu – the blue belt – and is continuing to develop his skills and work towards more competitive opportunities.

Faye Webster, Active Campus Coordinator at NESCol said, “NESCol is proud to hear of Barry’s success at the Open, a performance that reflects his hard work and dedication to judo.

“His achievement sets a fantastic example for fellow students and shows what opportunities are out there. NESCol is an institutional member of Scottish Student Sport and there are many sporting events that our students are eligible to participate in throughout the year.”

HND Fitness, Health and Exercise student Connor Harcus will also represent the College soon. He’s set to compete in the 200m event at the upcoming SSS Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow.

Faye added, “I encourage any student who is competent in their sport and keen to compete against other college and university students, to have a look at the events on the Scottish Student Sport website.

“The Badminton Championships are set to take place at RGU Sport in Aberdeen this March, which may be of interest to some of our students.

“We’re always delighted to support student athletes and see NESCol represented at these events. We wish Connor and Barry the best of luck with their training and competitions and look forward to hearing about their success.”
