You must hold the MCA Deck Officer Class 1 (Fishing) qualification.
Why take this course?
This conversion course allows holders of the Deck Officer Class 1 (Fishing) qualification to move into the Merchant Navy sector though obtaining the Officer of the Watch (Unlimited) qualification.
To obtain the Officer of the Watch qualification you are required to complete additional ancillary courses (see MSF 4345).

SQA HN unit – HR06 34 – Ships Stability: An Introduction
What you will get
Scottish Qualifications Authority Higher National Unit qualifications.
Application information
This course is offered via the blended learning mode of study, a combination of face to face tuition and self-study. Typical timeframes to achieve this qualification range from 6-12 months.
Progression & ancillary courses
To obtain the Officer of the Watch qualification you are required to complete the following ancillary courses (see MSF 4345)
- Proficiency in Medical First Aid
- STCW PSC&RB or CPSC or Lifeboatman Certificate
- EDH
- ECDIS
- HELM Operational
You can undertake the HND in Nautical Science (part 2), a blended learning programme, to progress towards the Chief Mate Certificate of Competency followed by the full Master’s certification.
