Why take this course?

This course is ideal for the following candidates:

  • Master (Code Vessels) less than 200GT – up to 150 miles from a safe haven.
  • Skipper (Fishing Vessel) less than 16.5m.
  • Boatmasters operating in certain areas with VHF DSC radio requirements.

Those working beyond A1 areas must obtain the General Operator Certificate (GOC).

What you will experience

This is a classroom based course and uses SAILOR 6000 equipment.

Course content includes:

  • Maritime safety procedures and rules.
  • GMDSS communication methods.
  • How to use VHF radio equipment.
  • Operating Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and Navtex systems.
  • Understanding and using Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) and Search and Recue Transponders (SARTs).

Key skills

  • Gain proficiency in VHF radiotelephony procedures within the maritime mobile service.
  • Develop hands on skills to operate relevant communication equipment effectively.
  • Understand the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), including the practical operation of its sub-systems and equipment.

Assessment

Participants will be evaluated through a written exam, radio communication exercises, and an operational performance test. Assessments will be conducted by an AMERC certified examiner, with exam papers sent to AMERC for verification.
