Why take this course?

Science is all around us, and the life sciences industry is where exciting discoveries happen. From making medicines to developing new medical technology, science plays a big role in everyday life. These industries use cutting-edge technology and offer lots of different career options. People with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) skills are in high demand, meaning great opportunities for the future.

The National Progression Award (NPA) in Scientific Technologies is a hands-on course where you’ll learn how to work in a real laboratory environment. You’ll build practical skills, grow your confidence, and take your first step towards a future career in science.

What you will experience

During the NPA in Scientific Technologies, you will study SQA units that build your knowledge of lab-based science. These include:

  • Laboratory Safety
  • Mathematics for Science
  • Fundamental Chemistry – An Introduction
  • Experimental Procedures: Science

Your learning will be assessed through a mix of closed-book assessments and coursework, such as writing laboratory reports. You will also take part in work experience to help you understand what it is like to work in a real science-based setting. Pupils will spend the equivalent of one day a week at College, usually over two afternoons. Classes are taught by staff who have experience working in science-based industries.
