Why take this course?

This five-month course, is a hands-on, practical programme. You’ll take part in site visits with industry partners, gain valuable real-world experience, and build the skills employers are looking for.

On successful completion, you’ll achieve an NPA qualification in civil engineering and be guaranteed an interview with an employer – offering a direct route into the industry as a civil engineering operative.

Developed in partnership with the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA), this course aims to address the skills gap within the industry and develop the next generation of civil engineering operatives in Scotland.

What you will experience

The course combines lectures and workshops with plenty of hands-on, on-site experience — with most of your time spent outdoors putting your skills into practice.

During the course, you’ll cover topics such as:

  • Workplace health and safety
  • Conform to productive work practices
  • An introduction to setting out secondary dimensional work controls
  • Install road drainage
  • Lay kerbs and channels
  • Excavate holes and trenches
  • Reinstate ground conditions
  • Form concrete structures
  • Lay and finish concrete
  • Work readiness
  • Skills portfolio

All students receive a full set of branded personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by CECA.
